Episode 06: On Finding Agency and Exploring Desires with Karli Petrovic of Yes, Misstrix

....on the overprotective messages she received about sex while growing up in the Midwest, her journey of going after what she wanted in her sexuality, and navigating sex as a new mom.

This month I got to talk to Karli Petrovic of the Yes, Misstrix Substack.

I loved this conversation with Karli and am so grateful to have had her as a guest on this next episode of thecuriousclit podcast! I’ve been reading her Substack for a while now, and I adore the way she mixes humor with reflections on sex, love, and relationships.

She’s a double Aquarius, and what struck me in our conversation is the way that Karli, in true Aquarius fashion, has continually chosen to reject norms that were given to her around gender and sexuality.

Even though she grew up in the Midwest and received a lot of problematic, over protective messaging about sex , she has always known that sexuality was something that was important to her — and she has had the courage to pursue the exploration of her body and what she truly desired. In our conversation, she opens up about some of the challenges that have come up along the way and how she’s navigated them - including being a new mom and how she’s approached her sex life with her husband after giving birth to their daughter.

This conversation has inspired me to think more about how we can break away from these things that we have been taught about sexuality and create our own way of being, especially for those of us who have been socialized as women and who were given so many messages around needing to be the gatekeepers of our sexuality.

As Karli points out, when we start to do this, we’re also creating a different world for the people around us, including our loved ones.

About Karli (she/her)

When the other kids dreamed of becoming teachers and astronauts, Karli wanted to be a witch…and also maybe a writer if that first choice didn’t work out. In adulthood, she opted for the best of both worlds. Today, she is the one-woman team behind Cup of Sugar, an agency working to help clients access their own creative magic through copywriting, intuitive coaching and tarot readings.

Storytelling is in her blood, and Karli spends an amazing amount of time writing everything from the Yes, Misstrix Substack, a newsletter about sex, love and relationships, to her very first novel. She’s also fully Aquarian (sun and moon), with a sexy splash of Scorpio (rising). Karli sometimes dreams in premonitions and is always choosing coffee over water. She lives in Austin, TX, with a muggle husband, baby girl and three goofy hounds, one of whom will definitely be a human in his next life.

We talk about:

  • what messages Karli received about sex growing up Catholic in the Midwest

  • how her father was the one to talk to her about sex & how this impacted the messages she received

  • the story behind the title of her Substack and how it relates to her own journey with sex

  • what has helped her be able to embrace her desires

  • the difficulty around having conversations around sex & her tips to make conversations around sex less stressful

  • her journey with prioritizing her pleasure

  • a problematic scene in The Holiday and what it has to say about expectations women face with sex and intimacy

  • what she has had to leave in the past to have better sex and relationships

  • how she’s been able to maintain & cultivate her sex life after giving birth

  • her work as a writer, copywriter, tarot reader, intuitive coach and where you can find out more about her

Sex is something that we all navigate at some point in our lives, but it isn’t something that we often get accurate information about or talk about with our friends, doctors, therapists, lovers, or even spouses. This silence and shame can affect us in many ways – including in preventing us from having better sex. Join Kelsey Britt, a certified sexuality educator and trauma-informed yoga teacher as she talks to sexuality professionals, teachers, parents, health & wellness practitioners, and other folks about what messages they received about sex across their lives and how these messages have impacted their lives and work. If you’ve ever felt alone in your experience around sex, or just want to improve your sex life, this podcast is for you!
